The establishment of the green ammonia plant in Sauda brings significant changes to the businesses at Birkeland. Our goal is not only to build a sustainable industrial solution but also to ensure that the businesses in the area can continue to grow and develop. Therefore, it has been important for us to ensure that the affected companies receive the support they need throughout the relocation process.
Before Iverson established itself in Sauda, Sauda Municipality had already identified Birkeland as a strategically important area for power-intensive industries. The area has access to both water and electricity, and a feasibility study confirmed that it is an ideal location for new industrial ventures. The regional plan for green industry, developed by Rogaland County Municipality, emphasises that Sauda and Birkeland remain among the best areas for such development.
Support for the relocation process
Relocating businesses can be a complex process, and therefore, Iverson has had a strong focus on ensuring good solutions for the businesses that need to relocate due to the establishment of the ammonia plant. All businesses that are required to move have been allocated replacement sites and will have all costs related to the relocation covered. This includes:
- New land and buildings with updated standards
- Relocation costs, including logistics and adjustments
- Registration and legal fees
- Documented losses due to any operational disruptions
- Connection to water and sewage systems, as well as groundwork
- Offers for residual heat, where technically feasible
We are working hard to ensure the transition is as smooth as possible. Our goal is for the businesses to move to their new premises with minimal disruption to their operations.
Each business will also be offered 10 hours of legal assistance to review the option agreements and fully understand the terms. If a business chooses to upgrade the building standard beyond what is required by current regulations, Iverson will cover the difference, provided this is an active choice made by the business, as it may have tax implications.
Collaboration and process
Iverson has maintained continuous and open dialogue with all affected businesses through a structured process:
- Spring 2024: Establishment of a dialogue forum with representatives from Sauda Vekst, Sauda Municipality, and Iverson e-Fuels.
- May–June 2024: Mapping discussions with 13 businesses led by Sauda Vekst.
- Summer/fall 2024: Job Arkitekter developed a proposal for a new industrial park at Birkeland, which was adjusted based on feedback from businesses.
- October 2024: The final proposal for the new industrial park was presented at Sauda Klubb.
- November 2024: Iverson sent draft option agreements to the companies' lawyers for legal review.
- Current status: One company, Helitrans, has signed an agreement and is proposed to be established at Kviå. Several others are in the final stages of agreement.
We will continue to work closely with each company to ensure that the relocation is carried out in the best possible manner. Our focus remains on maintaining an open dialogue with all parties to find the best solutions for each business.
