On September 15, 2025, the Sauda municipal council approved the zoning plan for Iverson eFuels’ green ammonia plant at the Birkeland industrial area. The decision represents a key milestone in bringing a new, future-oriented industry to the municipality. This industrial initiative will cut emissions globally while creating long-term jobs and local value.

We are very pleased that a majority supported the approval of our zoning plan. This is a crucial step forward for the project and the beginning of a new industrial chapter in Sauda. We look forward to constructive dialogue and close cooperation with the municipality, local businesses, and the community, says Hege Økland, CEO of Iverson eFuels.

The planned facility will include a 240 MW electrolysis unit powered by renewable energy and will produce green ammonia to reduce significant greenhouse gas emissions in both shipping and industry. Over its first decade of operation, the plant could cut emissions by nearly 3 million tons of CO₂, making it one of the region’s most impactful climate initiatives.

The project will also generate strong local ripple effects. During construction, more than 300 workers and subcontractors will be engaged in developing the Birkeland industrial area, building new infrastructure at Sønnåhavn, and relocating existing businesses into modern facilities. Once operational, the plant is expected to employ 50–60 permanent staff, with four to five times as many indirect jobs created in the local community.

Aligned with Rogaland County Council’s regional plan for green industry, the project will enable local renewable power to create lasting value and employment opportunities in Sauda.

With the zoning plan now in place, Iverson eFuels will proceed with technical development work toward a final investment decision. The establishment of the plant will position Sauda as a key hub for green value creation in the transition to a zero-emission society.
