Iverson explores new opportunities at Birkeland

Iverson is exploring new development opportunities at Birkeland following the discontinuation of the ammonia project, with a data centre as a key option. The project builds on renewable power availability and existing expertise, aiming for sustainable development and positive local impact.

Following the decision to discontinue the plans for green ammonia in Sauda, Iverson is now actively working to assess alternative development opportunities at Birkeland. One of the main options under consideration is the establishment of a data center powered by renewable energy.

Sauda has strong access to renewable power and is connected to a stable hydropower-based grid, combined with a long tradition of power-intensive industry. This provides a solid foundation for new industrial development. Iverson has submitted an application for grid connection for new development alternatives and continues its work in dialogue with relevant stakeholders.

Iverson will build on the substantial experience and expertise developed through the ammonia project. Much of the work already carried out remains relevant and provides a strong basis for further development. At the same time, certain aspects will need to be updated, and new assessments may be required. According to Sauda Municipality, a new zoning process may be necessary. Iverson is in dialogue with the municipality to clarify this.

Iverson will also continue its dialogue with landowners at Birkeland and maintain the existing option agreements in accordance with their terms.

As before, the new project will be developed based on principles of the circular economy, where efficient resource use, reduced environmental impact, and close collaboration with local industry are key. The ambition is to contribute to long-term and sustainable development in Sauda through the creation of lasting jobs and positive ripple effects for the local community. This includes not only direct employment, but also increased activity for local suppliers, contractors, and service providers. Such a project can help strengthen regional expertise, create new opportunities for collaboration between industry and educational institutions, and make Sauda more attractive for both residents and investors. At the same time, increased demand for local services, such as housing, retail, and other services, can support further growth in the community and contribute to a stronger and more diversified local economy over time. With the right development and strong local anchoring, the overall impact could be at least as significant as that of the previously planned ammonia plant, both in scale and duration.

Iverson will continue to keep the local community and other stakeholders informed about further developments.
